NOĆNA MORA ZA NEPRAVDU
ZORAN JANJETOV

U okviru 11. izdanja festival nezavisnog stripa NOVO DOBA „ZADNJE DOBA“

ZORAN JANJETOV: A NIGHTMARE FOR INJUSTICE

Opening on Saturday 10th of October 2020 at 8pm

He is a nightmare for injustice, and, for decades, he has been the most secluded comic book hero creeping around dark alleyways with such disreputable characters as Moebius and Jodorowsky. He is the celebrated master of a comic book brotherhood on that side where everything is prearranged – series and sequels, the number of pages and frames per square foot of the comic book, the precise storyboarding and detailed planning of illustrations and colors, in a big team and on schedule. Janjetov is also a hero on that other side where he draws only to impress and amuse himself, where freedom lives, where a comic book is nothing but a pun or a character in which both the script and the story are condensed, where he answers to no one. He finds himself on both the one and the other side of the comic book, on all its sides. Janjetov is a set of various characters such as The Unimaginable, The Priceless, The Irreplaceable, and many many more! He changes his shapes even several times a day and just as often changes the ways in which he draws or thinks about comics.
The exhibition Zoran Janjetov: A Nightmare for Injustice will be hosted by Remont Gallery from October 10-30 and it will feature the work which, at the same time, represents the metastases of Professor Tyumislav’s bestiaries and also all the other bestiaries which grew in size over the years (with all their characters, heroes and villains) and which, more and more, condensed into a single drawing, a single character, or just an abstract form. But also the results of the progress of his entire experience of drawing comics, where it becomes apparent just how much Janjetov dissected the entire comic book history of the XXth century, and what little we’ve spent of the XXIst – through influences, first editions, friends, collaborators and the unavoidable cult created around his connection with Moebius and Jodorowsky.

The rabid, rich and colorful collection of mad illustrations sometimes accompanied by silly text represents an ancient struggle between the narrative logic and the question of who’s looking at who and why. Janjetov’s situations are, for example, only an embodiment of a certain lexical centaur, an illogical connection or a worded drawing situation. For instance, a certain onomatopeia. A situation is what transpired before it, but, also, after it, where everything is equally important or unimportant. This exhibition will show what Janjetov enjoys doing, without continuity, or context, unplanned and without resistance, free yet undecipherable. „Because I very rarely have these outbursts of flow, these drawing ejaculations. (:::) But, the stuff I do for myself today doesn’t interest anyone. These things might have passed during the 70s, when Moebius was publishing his etherial stuff, but now even he would not be interesting to anyone. People have become less etherial (laughter)“. But, is he mistaken or what?
